DANIEL CARELA AND AMALIO DIAZ SIGNED BY THE DODGERS

Hard-throwing right-handers become the fifth and sixth Slammers signed to affiliated baseball…

(Joliet, IL) – The Joliet Slammers announced Sunday the sale of RHP Daniel Carela and RHP Amalio Diaz’s contracts to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Carela’s fastball has been a dominating force out of the bullpen in 2012 for the Slammers. In 36 appearances he compiled an ERA of 3.00 and struck out 41 batters in 36 innings. Carela, 24, did not allow a single run in his final seven outings for Joliet.

Diaz, 25, notched 19 saves in 22 attempts for the Slammers, good for second in the Frontier League. He was named a 2012 Frontier League All-Star and pitched a scoreless inning in the All-Star Game. Diaz recorded a 2.60 ERA in 34 appearances for Joliet.

“This is great for Daniel, Amalio, and our organization,” Slammers VP of Baseball Operations Ron Biga said. “Daniel’s hard work and pitching coach Carmen Pignatiello’s tutelage made him a very different pitcher than when he got here. Amalio had a great season with us and had we been playing at the same level we played last year he’d be very close to eclipsing Ryan Quigley’s single-season saves record.”

Carela re-joins the Dodgers organization after spending 2011 with their rookie level and high single-A teams. Diaz spent seven years in the Angels organization. They will join the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League (full season low-A).

They join LHP Aaron Dott (Yankees), RHP Ryan Quigley (Padres), RHP Chris Pack (Diamondbacks) and RHP Gaby Hernandez (Diamondbacks) as Slammers signed to affiliated baseball since the team’s inception in May of 2011.
